Field Trips (Optional – Limited Capacity)
All GSIS participants can choose to attend one of five field trips. Transportation is provided.

Biogreen Refinery
Waste-to-energy innovation by ITC (BIOGREENFINERY)
This experimental biorefinery explores the production of renewable fuels and e-fuels from green hydrogen, providing a perspective on how islands can reduce external energy dependence while developing new energy pathways.

Salto de Chira
Pumped hydroelectric energy project
This 200MW pumped-storage facility under development in Gran Canaria demonstrates how islands can integrate higher shares of renewable energy while maintaining grid stability.

Las Dunas de Maspalomas
Protected natural area
A coastal ecosystem combining dunes, lagoon, and palm grove, offering a real-world example of how islands manage environmental conservation alongside tourism and land use pressures.

ATH Bioenergy
Waste-to-biomethane and circular economy solution
This integrated bioenergy initiative focuses on transforming organic waste into renewable biomethane and natural fertilizers, offering a practical model for circular resource use on islands. By addressing both energy generation and waste management, ATH Bioenergy demonstrates how island regions can reduce landfill dependency, lower emissions, and create closed-loop systems that support environmental health and community well-being.

Banco de Algas
Marine biotechnology research
A national research infrastructure focused on microalgae and cyanobacteria. It offers insight into how island regions can build knowledge-based blue economy sectors.
