After decades of struggle, Mornington Island building projects set to ease housing crisis, improve services

On a remote island in the Gulf of Carpentaria, several major building projects have been launched to tackle the community’s housing crisis and inject millions of dollars a year back into the community.

The predominantly Indigenous population of Mornington Island has long been held back by its lack of housing.

Difficulties such as generating funding for projects and getting materials and tradespeople onto the island have prevented the development of much-needed emergency accommodation.

There is dire need for social and community housing as well as rooms to cater to the fly-in, fly-out workforce, which the island relies on to provide services.
