
This interview focuses on Island Innovation’s newly established Caribbean Climate Justice Leaders Academy, funded by Open Society Foundations, as discussed with project manager Stacy Alvarez de la Campa. The academy is a response to the unprecedented challenges posed by climate change in the Caribbean region.
The initiative aims to empower and amplify the voices of young activists in the Caribbean who are dedicated to addressing climate justice issues. The primary goal of the academy is to train and connect activists and young leaders in Climate Justice across the Caribbean region and other SIDS. Furthermore, creating a platform to promote Climate Justice for SIDS at COP28 and COP29. Finally, support a narrative in political environments for Climate Justice as a core topic in SIDS.
Stacy Alvarez de la Campa explained that the academy selects participants based on their commitment to climate justice and their ongoing efforts to address climate-related challenges in their communities. The program includes comprehensive training sessions, expert lectures, and skill-building activities. Participants are encouraged to learn from each other’s experiences, failures, and successes to develop innovative and effective solutions.
