Navigating the future of shipping: Bridging shipping, biodiversity and decarbonization

A UN Foundation panel titled Navigating the Future: Bridging Shipping, Biodiversity, and Decarbonization highlighted innovative approaches to achieving a sustainable maritime sector. Simon Warmsley, Senior Director for Ocean and Climate at the UN Foundation, emphasized the critical role of oceans in mitigating climate change and biodiversity loss, linking the discussion to the Maersk Partnership’s “Ocean Pathways,” which target a net-zero and nature-positive maritime sector by 2050.

Panelists detailed strategies like the World Shipping Council’s Whale Chart initiative, which maps global zones to minimize ship strikes and noise pollution. This effort complements broader industry goals to transition to low-carbon fuels, with 600 eco-friendly vessels anticipated by 2029.

Noel Young from Bermuda’s Blue Prosperity Program stressed the importance of local engagement and data sharing, particularly for small islands that face funding barriers. Panelists called for collaboration and innovation to ensure shipping supports both global decarbonization and biodiversity.
