A Solomon Islands writer has won an award at the First Nations Writers Festival for his story about a girl from two small islands in his home country that are feeling the impacts of climate change in the Pacific.
Titled ‘Lamawa’ the story by Willy Jnr Fafoi takes readers on a journey to the small islands in Solomon Islands and highlights the challenges presented by climate change.
“For the bigger countries you will not really experience the effect of sea level rises, but for my people at Kawi and Ngongosila, if you go there during the tide times, people would not have a place to live.
“Climate change is real. It’s not fake news, it’s not fake stories and people are effected by that,” Mr Jnr Fafoi said.
