CREWS Launches 2030 Strategy at COP30 to Scale Early Warnings for All

Excerpt from wmo.int As climate extremes intensify, the Climate Risk and Early Warning Systems (CREWS) Initiative today unveiled its 2030 Strategy: From Delivery to Transformation: Scaling CREWS’ Impact to 2030 at COP30 in Belém, Brazil. The Strategy outlines an ambitious goal: by 2030, all Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) will have the essential early warning and climate services needed to safeguard lives, livelihoods, and economies. “When a cyclone or flood hits, every second counts – early warnings turn each moment into life-saving measures.” said Francis Pigeon, Chair of the CREWS Initiative. “CREWS is not only delivering early warnings at scale, it is transforming how they are financed, governed, and sustained as a public good.”

COP30 in Brazil: What is at stake for global collaboration on climate and nature?

Excerpt from weforum.org As the world gathers in Belém, Brazil, for the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) from 10-21 November, the stakes are high. This climate summit marks a pivotal moment – a full decade after the Paris Agreement was adopted in 2015 – when the climate agenda confronts a fundamentally transformed global landscape. While governments once led the charge on climate action with unprecedented political support, the challenge today is different.

Pacific Island nations back Australia’s COP31 bid, push for “Pacific COP”

Excerpt from pasifika.news Pacific Island nations are rallying behind Australia’s bid to host the 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31), aiming for what they call a “Pacific COP.” Vanuatu’s Climate Change Minister, Ralph Regenvanu, reaffirmed the region’s support and readiness to assist in the lead-up to the final decision. “Time is running out… we have made a number of statements over the years saying we support the bid, we want the bid to be given to Australia in the form of a Pacific COP,” Regenvanu said. “As we’ve conveyed to Australia, we, the Pacific Island States, still stand ready to assist if there’s anything we can do before that critical time of the last week of COP for the decision to be made.”

Interactive: Who wants what at the COP30 climate change summit

Excerpt from carbonbrief.org COP30 in Belém will see them discuss issues including the best ways to track progress on adaptation and how to pursue a global “just transition”. Some of the event’s most important topics, such as countries’ new climate targets and raising international climate finance to $1.3tn, will officially take place outside the formal negotiations. Nevertheless, these issues will likely drive much of the COP30 narrative. In order to track parties’ positions on key negotiating points at the summit, Carbon Brief has analysed nearly 100 submissions to the UN and captured them in the interactive table below.

Diplomats worry over possible disruption by an absent US at the COP30 climate summit

Excerpt from reuters.com BRUSSELS/BELEM, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Governments heading to the U.N. COP30 climate summit in Brazil are bracing for the possibility that the Trump administration may seek to disrupt negotiations at the event - even without any U.S. officials showing up. The White House has said it will not send high-level officials to the annual conference, noting that President Donald Trump made his views clear at the U.N. General Assembly in September when he described climate change as the world's "greatest con job".

Is climate-conflict overlap COP30’s big blindspot?

Excerpt from thenewhumanitarian.org As flood, fire, and fighting grow worse, the intersection of climate change and conflict is weighing increasingly heavily on humanitarians, who fear these complex drivers of crisis will only merge further as the planet heats and geopolitical faultlines fracture. The past two UN climate summits saw rushes of high-level support and money for what was once a niche policy area, but experts are now sounding the alarm about the neglect of the climate, peace and security agenda at the COP30 summit in Brazil – and worry about what that means for communities caught up in converging crises.
