The Gran Canaria Island Council is promoting a pilot agrivoltaic project at the El Galeón farm in Santa Brígida to advance food sovereignty and energy transition

Excerpt and Photo Credit: canariasnoticias.es The Gran Canaria Island Council, through the Gran Canaria Island Energy Council (CIEGC) and in collaboration with the Department of Food Sovereignty and Primary Sector, has launched a tender for the installation of an agrivoltaic solar photovoltaic system at the El Galeón farm in the municipality of Santa Brígida. This strategic pilot project is designed to demonstrate the compatibility between agricultural activity and renewable energy generation, simultaneously advancing the objectives of energy transition, adaptation to climate change, and strengthening the island's food sovereignty. Agrivoltaics allows the installation of elevated solar panels on agricultural surfaces, so that productive soil is not lost, the microclimatic conditions of the crops are improved, reducing water and heat stress, and clean energy is generated for self-consumption, with a direct impact on the economic and environmental sustainability of the farms.

Big developments in Majuro as power plant, fuel farm and solar get underway

Excerpt from mbjguam.com Photo credit: Giff Johnson via mbjguam.com Major energy developments for the Marshall Islands capital will become visible from mid-2026 and beyond. The Marshalls Energy Co., the government’s state-owned enterprise that operates power services for Majuro, as well as supporting power operations on multiple remote outer islands, is mid-way through a revamp of its operations. The revamp includes five new generators to be installed in a now-under-construction power plant building, rebuilding and repairs to most of its eight-tank fuel farm which has been out of service due to corrosion and rust, the first use of a four megawatt array of solar panels to reduce spending on diesel fuel, and the latest initiative to begin sales of gasoline for the first time.

Public hospital in Lanzarote, Canary Islands launches geothermal heating and cooling system

Photo Credit: Gobierno de Canarias, via thinkgeoenergy.com Excerpt from thinkgeoenergy.com The Melina Orosa Hospital (El Hospital Molina Orosa) in Lanzarote in the Canary Islands has launched a 1002-kW geothermal facility that provides air conditioning, heating, and domestic hot water to the facility. This is the first installation of its kind in a public hospital in the Canary Islands and is a major step forward in the decarbonization strategy of the Canary Islands Health Services (Servicio Canario de la Salud / SCS). The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, the Minister of Health, Esther Monzón, and the Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy, Mariano H. Zapata, recently visited the new low-enthalpy geothermal plant, expressing support for the project and remarking on its significance for the region’s sustainability and energy security efforts.

From energy outposts to green pioneers: Europe’s islands show the way

Excerpt from youris.com It began with a national competition in 1997. Denmark, shaken by the 1970s oil crisis and industrial job losses, had been on a mission to go green and transform its economy. Samsø, an island of 4,000 people off the Jutland Peninsula and reliant on coal and oil from the mainland, responded to the call to create a model community of green innovation and technology. “We were struggling with a loss of jobs and an ageing population, too few kids to maintain a good school system, a roaring urbanisation draining all the resources out of rural districts,” says Søren Hermansen, a farmer born and raised on the island. “So, we were fighting to avoid that and we thought, ‘here is maybe an opportunity if we make this transition’… not because we want to save the world but or the climate but more to save ourselves. It was a very pragmatic attitude.”

Curacao’s Microgrid Shows How Small Island Nations Can Decarbonize

Photo credit: Markus Matzel / ullstein bild via Getty Images / Forbes.com Excerpt from forbes.com A couple of weeks ago, Hurricane Melissa barreled through the Caribbean, knocking out power for tens of thousands and exposing the fragility of island energy systems. For countries like Curacao, the stakes are high: from 1970 to 2020, small island developing states (SIDS) lost $153 billion due to weather extremes, a figure that dwarfs their average GDP of $13.7 billion. The event underscores a growing imperative—these nations must decarbonize while ensuring reliable power to withstand climate shocks. The solution may come in the form of a flexible microgrid model deployed in Curacao, which combines renewable energy with battery storage and engine-based power plants. The approach, led by Wärtsilä Energy, could serve as a blueprint for SIDS and other vulnerable regions worldwide.
